A few years ago, a cousin of mine, who was also my best friend, was bullied and ended her life. She was a student of 4 Semester of B-Tech. The reason of her suicide was getting failed in 2 subjects even after giving her best.
The root cause
of many such events is depression. Now a days, such tragic events commonly
happening around us. The root cause of many such events is depression.
Depression is now so common illness that it is also called "common cold of
mental illness".
What is
Depression?
Sometimes
feeling low in life is a normal thing. But when these feelings persist for a
long time and do not leave you, it can be depression. Life seems to be
monotonous and empty. Neither friends look good nor feel good at any other
work. Life seems to be hopeless and positive things also seem to be negative.
If this happens to you or to any of your friend/relative, there is no need to
panic. Need to understand the symptoms and causes of depression and then treat
it.
There are ups
and downs in the lives of all of us. Sometimes there is a lot of happiness when
success is achieved, sometimes when a person fails, the person becomes unhappy.
Sometimes people also give the name of depression to petty suffering, which is
absolutely wrong. Depression is very different from normal sadness. Let's
understand its definition:
According to MediLexicon’s Medical Dictionary,
depression is “a mental state or chronic mental disorder characterized by
feelings of sadness, loneliness, despair, low self-esteem, and self-reproach;
accompanying signs include psychomotor retardation (or less frequently
agitation), withdrawal from social contact, and vegetative states such as loss
of appetite and insomnia.”
It is to be noted that the usual tension or grief has nothing to do with depression.
If someone
match one or more of the following symptoms, he/she is likely to be depressed:
- Either he/she don't get nested or too much nest.
- He/she is unable to concentrate and have
difficulty doing what he/she used to do before.
- He/she feel helpless and hopeless.
- You can't stop your negative thoughts as much as
you try.
- Either he/she don't feel hungry or eat too much.
- He/she become irritate or aggressive sooner than
ever, and start to get angry.
- He/she drink more alcohol than normal.
- He/she thinks they don't deserve to live that
life and come to your mind suicidal thoughts. (So, get treated
immediately)
Depression and Suicide:
Too much depression can cause a person to think of
committing suicide. Depression can make a person feel helpless and he seems to
be able to solve all the problems in his life end. If someone talks to you
about the topic like committing suicide, he is probably suffering from
depression , and he is not just telling you his point , but he is screaming for
help . , and you must help him. And if you're looking to do it yourself, you
should seek the help of experts without delay.
If you look at these things in someone, it can be a
warning for suicide:
- Talking about killing or finishing himself.
- Suddenly people get goodbye to meet or make a
phone.
- To give his/her property or other valuable things
to others without reason.
- Expressing feelings that make a person seem very
helpless and complicated.
- Always talk about dying.
- Behave abnormally, such as making a red-light
jump without reason.
- To do unusual things like, "I don't have to
be a person."
- Suddenly be depressed and then happy to feel
happy.
If you think that any of friend or relative is thinking
of doing a suicide, immediately get him professional help. Talking openly about
suicidal thoughts and feelings can save someone's life.
Depression occurs differently in men, women, children
and the elderly. Keeping awareness about it helps to understand and
troubleshoot the problem correctly:
Depression in men:
Depressed men see less disappointment and self-hatred
than similar women. Instead, they complain about being tired, irritated, not
coming to the right, not minding at work.
Some other symptoms of depression such as anger, aggressiveness,
violence, carelessness and drinking more can also be seen in men. Although
women tend to double the chances of being depressed than men, but men have a
higher suicide tendency.
Depression in women:
In women, the chances of being depressed than men are double, some of the reasons are related to hormones, especially premenstrual syndrome (premenstrual syndrome PMS), premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), postpartum, and perimenopausal depression. Symptoms of depression in women are seen as eating more, sleeping more, growing weight, having guilt, being discouraged.
Depression in adolescence:
In some teens depression may be visible easily but in some teens it’s not. Excessive irritability is the biggest symptom of depression in real teenagers. A depressed teenager can easily be indignant, behave badly with others and may complain of body aches without causing it. Excessive pressure exerted by parents on children and comparison with others can also be a source of depression. If such teens are not treated, they may find it difficult at home and school, such children can start taking drugs easily, and they may also have suicide issues. But it can be treated faster when it comes to help.
Depression in the elderly:
Problems that come along with old age such as
disconnection, health problems, dependency on others, low income, etc. can make
the person depressed. But depression with aging is not common. Such elderly are
more of physical problems than emotional . That's why most of their
depression-related problems go unnoticed. Complaining about bad health all the
day can be an indicator of depression.
Cause of Depression:
There are exact causes of certain diseases, making
them easier to treat. If you have diabetes, take insulin, have appendicitis,
then get surgery. But depression is a slightly complicated disease. This can
happen not only because of the chemical imbalance in the brain but also for any
other biological, psychological and social reasons. In other words, it can also
be because of your lifestyle, your relationships, how you handle problems. Some
factors on depression tend to increase chances of having loneliness, lack of
social support, financial problems, recent stressful experiences, toxic marital
or other relationships, bad childhood, alcohol or other drug abuse, unemployment,
work pressure and many more.
Understanding the exact cause of depression can make
its treatment easier. For example, if someone is going into depression because
of being disturbed by his job, it can be more beneficial for him to go for any
other good job or employment rather than taking an antidepressant. If you are
troubled by loneliness, it can be more beneficial for you to spend quality time
with friends or pursue a good hobby. In such cases, depression can be relieved mere
changing the circumstances.
Depression Treatment:
Just as the symptoms and causes of depression are
different in different people, the ways to overcome it are different. If you
see symptoms of depression in yourself or in one of your well-wishers, take
some time to explore treatment options. In most cases, the best approach is the
combination of these measures: social support, lifestyle changes, emotional
skills building, and professional help.
Ask for help:
If you feel
that you are going into depression or are already depressed, do not hide it,
nor feel inferior because of it. Depression is a very common illness, and it is
entirely possible to treat it. Hiding it is like promoting it, discuss it in
your household, consult your integral friends as well. If there is none, you
can also meet a psychologist directly.
Improve your lifestyle:
You can do this
by improving relationships, exercising daily, eating healthy, using relaxation
techniques, changing negative thinking, meditating or reading good books.
Develop emotional
skills:
Many people are
not able to deal with stress properly and get emotional. Emotional skills help
you maintain your balance in adversity. For this you go for a short-term course
related to stress management.
Get help from a professional:
If you don't
talk about all these things, get help from a mental health professional . There
are several effective methods for depression treatment: such as therapy,
medications, alternative treatments, etc. Exactly what way to use will depend
on the causes of your depression.
